Jägersee
Facts and practical information
The Jägersee, formerly also called Eilsee, is a lake in Salzburg in the head of the Kleinarler Valley in the municipality of Kleinarl, formed by damming. It is located at an altitude of 1099 m in the Radstädter Tauern. The weir was built in the 17th century at the latest on a natural sill formed by the debris flow cones of the Maureck and Rossfeldgraben on the left bank and the Jägergraben on the right bank. Like the larger Tappenkarsee above it, the Jägersee is flowed through by the Kleinarlbach stream and thus supplied with fresh water.
The Jägerhaus am See, formerly called am Eil, was built in 1718 by the Archbishops of Salzburg. Since the 20th century the estate has been privately owned by the Nesselrode family, who run the hunting and fishing business.
Due to its location in a protected landscape area, Jägersee is a popular destination for excursions. It can be reached directly by car or public transport, but also from the village of Kleinarl, which is located only a few kilometers out of the valley, you can reach the Jägersee without much effort on a well-maintained footpath and bike path. A stroller-friendly walking path leads around the lake. At the lake there is a lake terrace and a rowing boat rental.
From Jägersee, families and hiking enthusiasts can take the "2-lake hike" to Tappenkarsee. In winter, a cross-country ski trail leads from Wagrain to the Jägersee. The walking path around the lake can also be used in winter.
The lake was stocked with Arctic char from Tappenkar Lake.
The discharge from Hunter Lake drives a small power plant built in 1979 with a bottleneck capacity of 77.2 kW.
