Grüner Markt, Baden bei Wien
Facts and practical information
The Green Market is the name given to a market in the municipality of Baden bei Wien, Lower Austria, now located in the center of the spa town on Brusattiplatz. The name derives from the fact that, in addition to meat, fish and other goods, fruits and vegetables were and still are available. The Green Market with its historic market stalls is a listed building.
The market, which had been held on the main square for centuries, was moved to its present location in 1811. At first, only Alleegasse was needed for it, but soon the weekly market from Pfarrplatz also came there. Originally, this area was a vineyard of the Heiligenkreuzer Hof, which was already outside the old city wall. Since the area of the weekly and vegetable market had to be enlarged due to a lack of space, in 1884 it was necessary for the city to acquire this free yard together with the garden.
In 1898 there was a political initiative to build the planned new municipal theater on the site.
In 1936, the square was renamed Brusattiplatz in honor of the mayor of Baden, Alois Brusatti. In 1995, it was connected to the municipal water and sewer system. The huts were partially renovated and the store entrances leading into Erzherzog-Rainer-Ring were moved to the center of the market. The inner market area was covered with clear glass.
