Peggauer Wand, Peggau
Facts and practical information
The Peggauer Wand is a cave-rich wall of the limestone plateau of the Tanneben in Styria, steeply sloping to the Mur valley. It belongs to the "Middle Styrian Karst", which is part of the Grazer Bergland, and is located 20 km north of Graz, in Peggau, at an average altitude of about 410 meters. The largest of the caves is named Große Peggauer-Wand-Höhle.
Animal bones from the last Ice Age and Paleolithic artifacts were found in the caves. As a result of the phosphate fertilizer shortage during and after World War I, imports were not possible, cave soil was taken as fertilizer in the early 1920s. Protection as a prehistoric site was secondary.
