SalzburgMuseum in der Neuen Residenz, Salzburg
Facts and practical information
The New Residence in Salzburg's Old Town, once also called Palazzo Nuovo, was built by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau to the east of Salzburg Cathedral. The ecclesiastical prince, at that time the richest in the entire Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, began this first building project in 1588 after the demolition of the burghers' and canons' houses there. Between 1592 and about 1597 the construction rested. The wings around the northern courtyard were subsequently completed around 1602. Later, tracts around another southern courtyard followed.
Initially, the first wings of the New Residence served as residences for the prince-archbishop's brothers. Perhaps this building was also intended as a later permanent private accommodation of the prince himself. In 1600, despite the continuing construction work, the regent already moved his brothers and sisters into this house. After 1600, when two of the archbishop's brothers left the city - probably after a previous family dispute - the intended use of the building also changed. Now the building was used for public purposes. It was probably also intended as a representative hostel for foreign princes.
Today, the New Residence is home to the Salzburg Museum, the Salzburg Heimatwerk is housed there, and it is also known for the Salzburg Glockenspiel, a historic percussion instrument.
