Burgruine Neudegg
Facts and practical information
Neudegg Ruin is the ruin of a hilltop castle west of the municipality of Pulkau in the village of Theras in the market town of Sigmundsherberg on a wooded cone in the western Pulka Valley. In literature Neudegg also appears as Nonneck, Neunegg and Neuneck.
Ortolfus de Nonnekke appears for the first time in a Plain document in 1183. Around 1220 a Chunradus de Niweneke appears as owner. Around 1390 a Cherssl der Schütze of Rugers appears. Whether there is a connection with the castle of Riegersburg, where an owner with a similar name appears around this time, is unknown. In any case, a Niklas Newnekker lays claim to this Cherssl. Later still a Peter Laher appears as owner, then Neuneck is called only a desolate house.
From the castle there is still a ruin with a towering rubble stone wall with a small round-arched window. The construction of the castle is believed to have taken place in the 12th or 13th century.
