Schloss Spielberg, Spielberg

Spielberg Castle, also known as Arbesser Castle is located in the municipality of Spielberg in the district of Murtal in Austria. Arbesser Castle was built in 1570. The castle was the inspiration for the name of the surrounding municipality. Around 1575 only the dominion around the castle was named Spielberg, later the castle gave its name to the whole municipality. The actual origin of the name Spielberg is unclear, but it has a prominent example. The administrator's correspondence found in the castle a few decades ago is one of the most revealing sources about rural conditions in Upper Styria in the mid-18th century.
