Schwimmtor, Klosterneuburg
Facts and practical information
Schwimmtor, also known as the Floating Gate, is a unique monument located in the picturesque town of Klosterneuburg, situated near Vienna in Austria. It is one of the most intriguing tourist attractions of the region, drawing both history and architecture enthusiasts.
This gate, erected in the 17th century, served a defensive purpose, being part of the fortification system of the town of Klosterneuburg. Its unique name derives from the fact that it was designed in such a way as to enable it to move on water. Thanks to this feature, it could be used as a movable barrier, regulating access to the town through the local river - the Danube (Donau).
The construction of Schwimmtor is an example of the engineering genius of those times. Although the gate no longer serves its original function, it still constitutes a valuable element of the cultural and historical heritage of the region. It is the only preserved example of a floating gate in Austria, which makes it a unique monument on a European scale.
Access to Schwimmtor is possible as part of a tour of the town of Klosterneuburg. History enthusiasts can admire not only the gate itself but also the remnants of the defensive walls and other monuments, which together create a rich mosaic of the past of this place.
Klosterneuburg itself is an attractive destination for excursions, known primarily for its impressive Augustinian monastery, which dominates the town, and the associated vineyards, producing excellent Austrian wines. Schwimmtor complements this offer, being a testament to the town's defensive past and an interesting element of local attractions.
