Apple butter

Apple butter is essentially a richer, thicker version of applesauce, made by slowly cooking apples with cider or water until the sugars caramelize. Some commercial brands might add preservatives like high fructose corn syrup or sodium benzoate. Interestingly, a variety called appelstroop from the Netherlands is noted for its iron content.

When properly canned, apple butter is quite safe from food-borne diseases, as the canning process eliminates harmful microorganisms. It’s a versatile addition to your kitchen, perfect as a spread, a condiment, or even a special ingredient in recipes.
