Church of Our Lady of Laeken, Brussels

The Church of Our Lady of Laeken, with its towering Gothic Revival spires, is a majestic sight in the heart of Brussels, Belgium. This 19th-century church stands as a tribute to the memory of Queen Louise-Marie, the first Queen of the Belgians, who passed away in 1850. King Leopold I, deeply affected by her death, commissioned the construction of this church as a royal burial place, ensuring it would be a site of historical and architectural significance.

The church's design is the work of architect Joseph Poelaert, who is also known for the monumental Palace of Justice in Brussels. Its construction began in 1854, but it was not until 1909 that the church was completed, with the final touches added long after Poelaert's death. The result is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture, with its intricate stonework, grandiose arches, and a remarkable crypt where members of the Belgian Royal Family are entombed.
