Brabo, Antwerp

The Brabo Statue stands as an iconic sculpture nestled in the heart of Antwerp, Belgium, woven into the city's rich tapestry of history and folklore. Situated in the bustling Grote Markt, the city's main square, this striking bronze figure captures a moment steeped in legend.

According to myth, the city of Antwerp once suffered under the tyranny of a giant named Antigoon, who resided by the Scheldt river. He exacted heavy tolls from passing ships and severed the hands of those who refused to pay. The hero Brabo, a Roman soldier, confronted and defeated the giant, severing Antigoon's own hand and flinging it into the river. This act of bravery is said to have given the city its name, derived from the Dutch hand werpen, meaning "to throw a hand."

The statue, created by sculptor Jef Lambeaux in the late 19th century, vividly depicts Brabo as he triumphantly tosses the giant's severed hand. Standing before the majestic Antwerp City Hall, the sculpture forms part of a fountain that also includes figures of mermaids and other mythical beings, adding to the city's charm and mystique.
