Facts About Middle American Ameiva
Holcosus festivus, also known as the Middle American ameiva, Central American whiptail, or tiger ameiva, is a captivating lizard species indigenous to Central America and northern South America. This lizard boasts a brown coloration accented by darker brown zig-zag patterns running along its back. Juveniles display an especially striking feature: metallic-blue tails.
A similar species, Holcosus quadrilineatus, exists, which can sometimes lead to confusion.
Holcosus festivus comprises three recognized subspecies:
1. Holcosus festivus festivus - Found in northern Colombia and Panama.
2. Holcosus festivus edwardsii - Inhabits regions in Guatemala, Honduras, southern Mexico, and Nicaragua.
3. Holcosus festivus occidentalis - Located in Costa Rica.
It is noteworthy that when the taxon author’s name appears in parentheses, it indicates that the species or subspecies was initially described under a different genus.
