Motithang Takin Preserve, Thimphu

Nestled in the lush green hills of Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, the Motithang Takin Preserve is a unique wildlife reserve that offers visitors an opportunity to encounter the Takin, Bhutan's national animal. This serene sanctuary is not your typical zoo; it's a refuge for a variety of Himalayan species, but it is primarily known for protecting the takin, a peculiar-looking bovid found only in the Eastern Himalayas.

The Motithang Takin Preserve was originally a small zoo, but the King of Bhutan, believing that such a place was not in alignment with the country's environmental and religious convictions, ordered the release of the animals. However, the takin, with their docile nature, remained in the area and often ventured into nearby streets in search of food. Concerned for their safety and the inconvenience to residents, the government created the preserve to provide a natural habitat for them.
