Castelo do Batel, Curitiba
Facts and practical information
The Castelo do Batel is a palace located in the Batel neighborhood in the city of Curitiba, capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná. It currently functions as an events center. Built in 1924 by coffee grower and honorary consul of the Netherlands Luiz Guimarães, it was bought by Moysés Lupion, former governor of Paraná, in 1947, when it was declared a Historical Heritage Site. It had other uses until it was designated as a suitable place for an events center in 2003.
This work follows the eclectic style, and is a replica of the Loire Valley castles in France. The mansion features a cylindrical tower with a conical roof, full arched portals, and mansards on the roof; the roof, with its steep slope, appears from afar to be made of slate. The gray-colored trim on the outer walls is bossed. Interrupted and triangular arched fronts on the verandah, columns forming the shoulders of the main entrance, carved wooden padded doors, stained glass windows, marble floors in the churchyard, are the most expressive external finishing details. With ample garages, tennis court, it stands out for its large trees and gardens, glimpsed through the magnificent wrought iron gates and railings. For many years the castle was the city's main architectural reference and the setting for receptions and parties of great repercussions in the wealthy circles of Curitiba.
