Museu do Oratório, Ouro Preto
Facts and practical information
The Oratory Museum is a Brazilian museum housed in a three-story historic mansion located in the city of Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, attached to the Church of Our Lady of Carmel.
It was created in 1998, as a result of the Instituto Cultural Flávio Gutierrez, of the Gutierrez family, which owns the museum's collection of 162 oratories and 300 images. The institute's president, Ângela Gutierrez, is also the organizer of the Museum of Arts and Crafts, in Belo Horizonte, although the museum was designed by French museologist Pierre Catel.
The pieces were donated by Ângela to IPHAN and are characterized by the diversity of types, sizes, and materials. Valuable details of the architecture, painting, clothing, and customs of the time when they were produced - from the 17th to the 20th centuries - allow for "a true anthropological journey through the history of Brazil.
