Teatro Goiânia, Goiânia
Facts and practical information
Teatro Goiânia, inaugurated on June 12, 1942, is the most traditional cultural space in Goiânia, capital of the Brazilian state of Goiás. It is part of the architectural set of the city's project. It is in the Art Deco style of architects Jorge Félix and José do Amaral Neddermeyer. Its construction began in 1940 and was completed in 1942. The Official Post of June 12, 1942 carried the information: "The inauguration of the Goiânia Theater will be marked by a super production of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, next Tuesday. Pedro Ludovico Teixeira, the then Federal Intervenor of the State, stood at the theater entrance and unveiled the plaque, inaugurating the most luxurious show house in the new capital of the state of Goiás. It was in the Cine-Theater Goiânia that the Cultural Baptism of Goiânia took place. The film Divine Torment, with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, was shown at the premiere. In the same week, the Eva Todor Company, the largest Brazilian comedy company, opened the stage with the work Colégio Interno, by Ladislaw Todor. Although it was designed for film and theater functions, it was hardly used as a movie theater.
Besides its historical importance, today the theater, with a capacity for 850 people, is one of the main venues for the presentation of dance, theater, and classical and popular music in the city, and was declared a National Heritage Site in 2003.
The Goiânia Theater was one of the first buildings in the new capital. It is located on Tocantins Avenue, at the crossroads with Anhanguera Avenue, central region, in the city's original plan.
It is open Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 8 pm, and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays for performances.
The Goiânia Theater, after comprehensive restoration work and reconstruction of original elements, had its reopening on December 28, 2010. The solemn reopening took place with a grand concert, with baritone Renato Mismetti and pianist Maximiliano de Brito as soloists, accompanied by the Goyazes Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Eliseu Ferreira.
