Esplanada dos Ministérios, Brasilia

The Eixo Monumental is a long avenue that is located in the center of the Plano Piloto of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. It was inaugurated with the city, on April 21, 1960. It stretches for sixteen kilometers, connecting the former Rodoferroviária de Brasília, now occupied by district offices and secretariats, in the far west, to the Praça dos Três Poderes, in the far east, near Lake Paranoá.

It was created by Lúcio Costa in his project for the Plano Piloto, where it is now called Eixo, although it was sometimes called Avenida Monumental. The Monumental Axis is one of the two great axes of Lucio's proposal that make up the shape of the Pilot Plan, the other being the Highway Axis, the popular Eixão. The two axes intersect at the Bus Station of the Plano Piloto, which is therefore considered the site of Brasilia's Marco Zero. It is popularly known as the "body of the plane", according to the erroneous popular belief that the city would have been projected with this shape.

As planned, the avenue brings together most of the main Brazilian government buildings, including the headquarters of the executive, legislative and judiciary branches in the Praça dos Três Poderes and the sixteen ministry buildings. The avenue is also home to various cultural and sports facilities, leisure areas, and other institutional buildings. Its broad central strip hosts fairs, shows, competitions, and protests, among other events.
