The Casa do Pontal Museum is the most important museum of popular art in Brazil and is located in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Rio de Janeiro and "a touristic and anthropological reference not only in Brazil, but all over the world.
It is composed of the production made by around 200 artists since the beginning of the 20th century, involving 8,000 pieces, including sculptures, puppets, carvings, modeling, and articulated mechanisms, produced using clay, wood, fabric, sand, iron, aluminum, bread crumb, straw, and wire. The collection was assembled by Jacques van de Beuque, who also built the museum's headquarters, and continues to be updated with various partnerships and collaborations. It is currently managed by anthropologist and the creator's daughter-in-law, Ângela Mascelani.
Among the examples are puppets by Mestre Vitalino, Zé Cabloco, and Manuel Eudócio that portray the customs of parties in the interior of Brazil. Brazilian types such as cowboys, cangaceiros, samba school members, and bride and groom in wedding costumes are also represented. Pieces by Noemisa, Antonio Porteiro, Adailton Lopes, and Mestre Didi also make up the collection.
In 1996, the institution received the Rodrigo de Melo Franco de Andrade Award, granted by IPHAN.
According to 2010 data, 40,000 people, with students being the majority, visit it per year, equivalent to about 111 per day.
