Instituto Tomie Ohtake, São Paulo
Facts and practical information
The Tomie Ohtake Institute, inaugurated in November 2001, stands out for being one of the rare spaces in the city specially designed, architecturally and conceptually, to hold national and international exhibitions of fine arts, architecture, and design. The building was designed by Tomie Ohtake's son, Ruy Ohtake. The institution is presided by Ricardo Ohtake, also Tomie Ohtake's son, and its chief curator is Paulo Miyada.
As a tribute to the artist after whom it is named, the Institute develops exhibitions that focus on the last 60 years of the art scene, or previous movements that lead to a better understanding of the period in which Tomie has been working, organizing shows never before seen in Brazil such as Louise Bourgeois, Josef Albers, Yayoi Kusama, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, among others.
In addition to a remarkable exhibition program in the Brazilian cultural scene, which unfolds in other activities such as debates, research, content production, documentation and publications edition, Instituto Tomie Ohtake has been developing, since its foundation, an extensive research in the teaching of contemporary art. Therefore, it was a pioneer in the creation of new processes to train teachers and students from public and private schools, in addition to conducting a series of activities directed to the general public and projects to stimulate the development of contemporary production.
