Facts About Idea stolli
The "Idea stolli" commonly known as the common tree nymph, is a beautiful butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae and specifically to the subfamily Danainae. These butterflies are prevalent throughout Southeast Asia. Within the genus "Idea" there are twelve known species, five of which are found in West Malaysia.
The common tree nymph is easily identifiable by its striking white wings adorned with black spots and veins, measuring approximately 150 mm in wingspan. The caterpillars (larvae) of this species feed on plants such as "Aganosma cymosa" and "Aganosma corymbosa."
There are several subspecies of "Idea stolli" each inhabiting different regions:
1. I. s. alcine (Fruhstorfer, 1910) - Southern Borneo and Sarawak
2. I. s. bintanga (van Eecke, 1915) - Riau and Lingga Island
3. I. s. hypata (Fruhstorfer, 1910) - Sulu Island
4. I. s. logani (Moore, 1883) - Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra, and Batu Island
5. I. s. stolli (Moore, 1883) - Java
6. I. s. thalassica (Fruhstorfer, 1910) - Natuna Island
7. I. s. virgo (Fruhstorfer, 1903) - Northern Borneo
Each subspecies boasts its own distinctive characteristics and geographical range, making the common tree nymph a captivating subject for butterfly enthusiasts and researchers alike.
