Boyana Church, Sofia

Nestled at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain in Sofia, Bulgaria, the Boyana Church is an emblem of medieval architecture and artistry. This Orthodox church, dating back to the 10th century, is renowned for its series of exquisite frescoes that embody the zenith of Eastern European painting.

The Boyana Church is a complex of three structures, built in the 10th, 13th, and 19th centuries, respectively. The most notable is the second church, erected in 1259, which houses the celebrated frescoes. These vivid depictions present a comprehensive ensemble of 89 scenes with 240 human images, each painted with remarkable detail and emotional depth.
