Spotted Lake
Facts and practical information
Spotted Lake, located in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada, is a geological wonder that captivates visitors with its unique and otherworldly appearance. This saline endorheic alkali lake is particularly known for its distinctive spots, which are most visible during the summer months when much of the water evaporates.
The lake's spots are created by the concentration of various minerals, including magnesium sulfate, calcium, and sodium sulfates. These minerals are left behind as the water evaporates, forming colorful circles that can range in hue from blue to green to yellow, depending on the mineral composition. In addition, the lake contains some of the highest quantities of magnesium sulfate, calcium, and sodium sulfates found anywhere in the world, as well as eight other minerals and small doses of four others, including silver and titanium.
Spotted Lake holds a sacred place in the lore of the local Syilx (Okanagan) First Nations people. They have long revered the lake for its therapeutic properties and consider it a sacred site. The lake's minerals are believed to have healing properties, and historically, the waters were used by First Nations people to soothe aches and ailments.
The lake's ecological significance and cultural importance led to its acquisition by the Indian Affairs in Canada in 2001, with the intention of protecting the site for future generations. While the lake is located on private property and is not open for public swimming or walking, there is a viewpoint along Highway 3 that allows tourists to safely observe and photograph the lake's remarkable spots.
