War of 1812 Monument, Ottawa
Facts and practical information
The War of 1812 Monument in Ottawa stands as a tribute to a pivotal episode in Canadian history. Located prominently on Parliament Hill, the monument commemorates the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, an important conflict in which British, local militia, First Nations, and Métis peoples united against the United States invasion.
Unveiled on November 6, 2014, the monument aims to honor those who fought for Canada during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the peace and security that followed. The large bronze and granite structure features seven figures, each representing a different facet of the Canadian forces that contributed to the war effort. These include a Royal Navy sailor, a Voltigeur Canadien, a Métis fighter, a British Army soldier, a First Nations warrior, and a Canadian militiaman. At the forefront is a woman, Laura Secord, celebrated for her long trek to warn British forces of an impending American attack.
The figures are positioned around a central column, which is itself adorned with the coats of arms of the four main participant groups - the United Kingdom, English Canada, French Canada, and Indigenous peoples. The monument was designed by Toronto sculptor Adrienne Alison and was selected through a national design competition.
The War of 1812 Monument not only serves as a reminder of Canada's military past but also as a symbol of the diverse groups that have shaped the nation's history. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the War of 1812 and the enduring peace that Canada has enjoyed since.
