Facts About Barros Luco
The Barros Luco is a cherished hot sandwich from Chile, made with tender beef and melted cheese, and served on a variety of breads. This delicious creation is named after Ramón Barros Luco, a former President of Chile, who frequently ordered it at the National Congress of Chile’s restaurant. Some assert that the sandwich first originated from Confitería Torres, while others believe its birthplace was the National Congress restaurant.
The beef used in the Barros Luco is typically the same cut found in another popular Chilean sandwich, the churrasco. The Barros Luco is versatile in its bread options, commonly served on pan de frica, pan amasado, marraqueta, and even sliced white bread—all of which are favored in Chile.
Adding an intriguing twist to the story, President Barros Luco's cousin, Senator Barros Jarpa, preferred his sandwiches with ham and cheese. This preference led to the creation of a variation known as the Barros Jarpa sandwich.
