Fortifications of Xi'an, Xi'an
Facts and practical information
The Fortifications of Xi'an, an ancient city wall located in the heart of Xi'an, China, stand as a testament to the city's historical significance and architectural ingenuity. Constructed during the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century under the reign of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, the wall was built to protect the city from potential invaders.
Stretching an impressive 13.7 kilometers in length, the wall encircles the old city of Xi'an, forming a rectangular loop. It is one of the most complete and best-preserved city walls in China, offering a unique glimpse into the country's rich past. The wall itself is massive, with a height of 12 meters and a width ranging from 12 to 14 meters at the top, making it wide enough for a defensive march.
The fortifications are punctuated by four main gates - one on each side, named Changle (eternal joy) in the east, Anding (harmony peace) in the west, Yongning (eternal peace) in the south, and Anyuan (forever harmony) in the north. Each gate is flanked by a beautifully constructed watchtower, which was used to defend the city against attacks.
Visitors today can walk or cycle on top of the walls, taking in the panoramic views of both the ancient inner city and the modern developments beyond. The South Gate, also known as the Yongning Gate, is the most elaborate of the four and serves as the starting point for many tourists exploring the wall.
The fortifications are not only an impressive military barrier but also a cultural treasure, with lanterns lining the ramparts and traditional Chinese architecture on display. At night, the wall is spectacularly illuminated, providing a stunning backdrop for evening strolls.
