Kowloon Walled City Park, Hong Kong
Facts and practical information
Nestled amidst the bustling cityscape of Hong Kong lies the serene Kowloon Walled City Park, a tranquil oasis steeped in history and culture. Once the site of the infamous Kowloon Walled City, this park is a beautifully landscaped garden where visitors can escape the urban rush and delve into the past.
The Kowloon Walled City was originally a Chinese military fort and became an enclave after the New Territories were leased to Britain in 1898. Over the years, the area evolved into a densely populated, largely ungoverned settlement. In 1993, after the demolition of the notorious Walled City, the space was transformed into a traditional Qing dynasty garden and opened to the public in 1995.
Covering an area of 31,000 square meters, the park features eight thematic zones, each offering a glimpse into the heritage of the site. The zones include the Yamen, a restored building that was once the administrative office and residence of the commanding officer; the Old South Gate, the only remaining original gate of the Walled City; and the Eight Floral Walks, each lined with a different species of plant that blooms in different seasons.
Visitors can enjoy the park's peaceful pathways, admire the traditional pavilions, and relax by the lotus pond. The park also features an exhibition hall that provides historical insights into the Walled City's past. Sculptures and relics found during the park's construction are on display, offering a tangible connection to the site's varied history.
