He stands on a bin closing from the south with the bay of the Old Port, opposite the Revelin Fort. Its function was the defense of the port.
On the promontory, which was one of the quays from the port, originally a small fort on the set of a quadrangle, first called the Gundulic Fort, and then the fort of Saint John, from St. John. Between this fort and the tower of Saint Luke on the opposite side of the port a block blocking was stretched. In 1346 in the vicinity of Fort Gundulic, a tower called "on the quay", adjacent to the port gate was erected along the city walls. At the beginning of the 15th century, a low semi -circular bastion was arranged before the Gundulic Fort. In the years 1500-1552 a new, great fort was erected on the promontory, including a completely former fort and bastion.
