The National Square in Zadar was formed in the Middle Ages as Plate Magna, the center of the secular life of Zadar and the center of the city government with today's city lounge, city guard and new town councilor. The name of Plata Magna was replaced by the later name of the Lord Square, and after II. The present name of the People's Square was settled.
The National Square is dominated by the City Hall, built on the site of an old and unobtrusive eternity that was demolished during the Italian administration over Zadar and erected in 1934.
In the 13th century, a city lounge was erected in the Square, as a place for public political and legal meetings, and it kept municipal measures for length, weight and volume. Today's building is the center of the artistic life of Zadar with the famous international events that are held in the summer months: the plowing photographs of "Man and the Sea" and the porch of the Croatian painting "The Blue Salon".
The City Guard is located opposite the City Lodge, in which the ethnological department of the National Museum was located, and after the renovation it serves as an exhibition-gallerial space. In the 18th century, a clock tower was upgraded on the city guard, which has been working continuously since 1803. The larger bell, which beats the hours, has been transferred from the Captain's Tower, and less who beats a quarter of an hour, from the neighboring church of St. Lovre. The clock was made and mounted by the Martini Urrnski Martini. Otherwise, in 1555, a public city clock on the bell tower of the church is mentioned in Zadar, forty martyrs or St. Barbara standing near today's forum coffee shop.
The great Candelabar, which was set up on the National Square on the 100th anniversary of the first electric light bulb in Zadar, was a replica of the old Candelabra of 1894. The oldest preserved facility within the square is the church of St. Lalovre from the 11th century whose space can be viewed from the Lovre Cafe. On the eastern part outside the square is Ghirardini Palace in Romanesque style with a 15th -century Renaissance balcony.
The long tradition of Zadar's coffee shops began at Narodni Square, when at the time Piazza Dei Signori, in 1730, Josip Carcening, the first Maraschin manufacturer in Zadar, opened the first Zadar coffee shop. In 1860, the Caffè del Casino cafe was opened by factorywoman Antonio Cosmacendi, who would become a mirror cafe after modernization in 1892. The tradition of Zadar's coffee shops and nowadays continues several cafes and stacks in Narodni Square, which is a favorite place to meet and drink coffee.
In Narodni Square, on which the main Kalelarga Street Zadar Street will officially begin, basketball players and their victories and trophies are greeted. There was also a magnificent welcome of the Zadar Riva Group after their victory at Eurovision in 1989.
In one of the actions "I love Croatia" organized by the Croatian National Tourist Board, the Zadar National Square was named the most beautiful Croatian square.
