El Capitolio, Havana

El Capitolio, or the National Capitol Building, is one of Havana's grandest architectural landmarks, resonating with the city's historical and cultural significance. Modeled after the United States Capitol, it stands as an emblem of the Cuban capital, representing the nation's aspirations and complex past.

Constructed in 1929 under the direction of Cuban president Gerardo Machado, the building was designed by Eugenio Rayneri Piedra, who envisioned a structure that would rival the grandeur of its American counterpart. It served as the seat of government until the Cuban Revolution in 1959, after which its purpose shifted over the decades.

The neoclassical edifice, with its iconic dome, reaches a height of 92 meters, making it one of the most visible structures in Havana's skyline. The dome, which was once the third largest of its kind globally, is covered in gold-colored stone and offers a striking contrast to the azure Caribbean sky.

Inside, visitors are greeted by the lavish Hall of Lost Steps, named for its peculiar acoustics. The main hall is adorned with impressive gold-leaf frescos and Italian marble, and at its center lies the Statue of the Republic, one of the largest indoor statues in the world, standing over 15 meters tall.

El Capitolio also houses the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the National Library of Science and Technology. After extensive restorations, the building reopened to the public, allowing visitors to appreciate its restored beauty and historical exhibits.
