Facts About Olomoucké tvarůžky
Olomoucké tvarůžky, also known as Olomoucké syrečky or simply Olomouc cheese, is a distinctive soft cheese originating from Loštice in Moravia, Czech Republic. This cheese is characterized by its strong aroma, bold flavor, and distinctive yellowish color. Made from skim cow's milk, it contains no rennet, colorings, flavorings, or stabilizers and boasts a remarkably low fat content of just 0.6%. Named after the city of Olomouc, where it was first sold, it has held Protected Geographical Indication status by the European Union since 2010.
The origins of Olomoucké tvarůžky date back to the 15th century, and it was even enjoyed by Emperor Rudolf II. Initially considered a humble peasant food, it was primarily produced in the villages surrounding Olomouc. It wasn't until the 19th century that it became known as Olomouc cheese. The A. W. Company has been producing this cheese since 1876 and even has a museum dedicated to its history at their Loštice production plant. In a modern twist on tradition, a shop in Loštice began making ice cream from Olomouc cheese in 2016.
