Dům pánů z Kunštátu, Brno
Facts and practical information
The House of the Lords of Kunštát is a Renaissance palace in the historic centre of Brno, cadastral area of the City of Brno, Dominikánská Street No. 9. It is probably the most important monument in the complex of the so-called Great Palíček.
In the middle of the 14th century there were already burgher houses on the site of the present building, one of them was owned by Heralt of Kunštát, Petr of Kunštát later bought the neighbouring house. The buildings were connected by a complete Renaissance reconstruction in 1585-1599, when they were owned by Jan of Pernštejn, and the palace has been preserved in this form to this day. In 1636, it was acquired by the Moravian governor Julius of Salm and Neuburg and the so-called Salm House, as it was then called, was used by the Moravian Estates. In 1708, the city of Brno bought the palace from Maximilian František, a free lord from Deblin, and the builder Mořic Grimm converted it into a city market with 50 shops. It was also used as a storehouse for flour and grain, and theatre companies also held performances here. In the 19th and the first half of the 20th century it was the seat of offices.
In 1944, the house was damaged by bombing, its reconstruction into the Brno Cultural Centre took place in 1952-1955. Since 1958 the palace has been used by the Brno House of Arts. In 1990, a total reconstruction of the building was started, but due to lack of funds it was stopped after two years and the building remained closed. It was restarted in 2000 and completed in 2002. Since the following year, the House of the Lords of Kunštát has again been used for exhibitions of the Brno House of Arts. The house also houses the Troika café, where theatre performances, discussions and concerts are held.
