Zámek Žďár nad Sázavou, Žďár nad Sázavou
Facts and practical information
The former convent of the Well of the Blessed Virgin Mary / also the Fountain of the Virgin Mary in Žďár nad Sázavou is originally a Gothic building complex, modified in the Baroque period, among others with the participation of Jan Santini. The monastery, which was one of the most important Cistercian monasteries in the Middle Ages and Baroque period, was founded in 1252 and closed after 1784. The prelature building was then used as a castle. The complex is therefore sometimes referred to as Žďár nad Sázavou Castle; since 1970 it has been a cultural monument. The chateau is situated just on the Moravian side of the historic Czech-Moravian border, when the monastery also served - among other things - as a border station.
