Starý židovský hřbitov, Uherský Brod
Facts and practical information
The old Jewish cemetery in Uherský Brod was probably founded in the 17th century at the latest. The memorial on the site of the former Jewish burial ground is located about 700 m southwest of the New Jewish Cemetery in Pod Valy Street, east of the Uherský Brod railway station.
After 1870, when a new cemetery was established, this burial ground lost its function and was devastated during the occupation. After the end of the war, the remaining tombstones were moved to the new cemetery. The oldest preserved tombstone dates back to 1601. Only the torsos of broken and sunken tombstones can be found on the original site.
The Jewish community of Uherskobrod ceased to exist in 1940. Of the former ghetto in the southeastern part of the walled city, only two buildings have survived to this day; the old and new synagogue and the Orthodox prayer room in the ghetto have been demolished.
