Kolowrat, Rychnov nad Kněžnou
Facts and practical information
Rychnov nad Kněžnou Castle is located on a gently sloping plateau above the sharp slope of the Kněžna River in the northwestern part of the town of Rychnov nad Kněžnou, situated in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains about 32 km east of Hradec Králové. Together with the facade of the Holy Trinity Church, the castle is one of the largest Baroque complexes in Bohemia. The author of this architectural composition is probably the architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. The ensemble forms an exceptional landmark of the town, which is called "Rychnovské Hradčany".
At present, the chateau houses, among other things, an exhibition of the Museum and Gallery of the Eagle Mountains. There is also a chateau picture gallery with pieces of Czech and world painting from the middle of the 15th century. There is also a collection of firearms from the 18th century and original furniture of the Kolowrat family. The castle is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
