Kulturní středisko Dobříš, Dobříš
Facts and practical information
The former new synagogue, built in 1903-1904 in Dobříš, stands on the north-west corner of Peace Square No. Army.
It was built in the Neo-Romanesque style according to the design of architect Alois Richter. It is oriented towards the north, which is a unique exception in the Czech Republic. It served its purpose until 1938. During World War II the building served as a grain warehouse, then as a museum warehouse and since 1955 it has been used as a cultural house. Exhibitions are held on the upper floor, the ground floor provides space for concerts and other cultural events, and the town council also holds meetings here.
During and after World War II, the building was neglected and fell into disrepair, and in 1959 the tower in the front was demolished and the ceiling of the main prayer hall was divided into two floors. After the 2008 renovation, the Moses tablets were returned to the upper gable. There was also an old synagogue in the town until 1960 and there is a Jewish cemetery.
