NPP Kalendář věků, Pálava Protected Landscape Area
Facts and practical information
Calendar of Ages is a national natural monument No. 2318 in the district of Breclav. The area is managed by the Pálava Protected Landscape Area Administration.
The reason for the protection is the stratotype of the Upper Pleistocene in the dry loess facies in the profile of the northern foothills of the Pavlov Hills.
Before the exit from Dolní Věstonice in the direction of Pavlov there is an old brickyard. At the beginning of the 1950s, the academic Dr. Klíma dug a 12 m high, 5 m wide and 3 m deep notch in its perpendicular clay wall. This notch is a calendar of the ages. One hundred thousand years are looking back at us from this wall. In that time, the 12 metres have been gradually built up in layers of loess and sand. This calendar helps Stone Age archaeologists to date the layers in the excavations and is therefore still used.
