NPR Mohelenská hadcová step
Facts and practical information
The Mohelenska Snake Steppe is a national nature reserve towering above the meander of the Jihlava River called "Devil's Tail". It is located near the village of Mohelno in the Třebíč district in the localities of Mohelna steppe on the left and Čertova hráz on the right bank. The reserve covers an area of 108.94 ha and is managed by the AOPK ČR, Regional Department of the Administration of the Žďár Hills Protected Landscape Area. The Hadcová steppe is one of the most valuable sites in the Czech Republic and Europe. The altitude here varies from 260 m above sea level to 385 m above sea level. The Mohelenská steppe was declared a protected area on 31 December 1933 because of the diversity of fauna and flora caused by the snake bedrock. The serpentinite is a strongly basic dark green or blackish-green rock that accumulates heat well. Snake soils are rich in magnesium but very poor in nutrients. In combination with a lack of rainfall, this substrate has adverse effects on many plant species, causing, for example, dwarfism.
The critically endangered snakehead, the false mallow, and the animals Mantis religiosa, Libelloides macaronius and the green lizard are found on the steppe. 91 of 107 Central European ant species have also been found here.
