Charles Bridge, Prague

Spanning the Vltava River in Prague, the Charles Bridge is not only a crucial connection between the city's Old Town and the Lesser Town, but also a monumental testament to medieval engineering. Constructed in the 14th century under the auspices of King Charles IV, the bridge has withstood the test of time, becoming one of Prague's most iconic landmarks.

The Charles Bridge is adorned with a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, originally erected around 1700 but now mostly replaced by replicas. Measuring 621 meters long and nearly 10 meters wide, the bridge was the only means of crossing the river until 1841, which made Prague an important trade route between eastern and western Europe. Its construction started in 1357 and concluded in the early 15th century. The robustness of the bridge is attributed to the use of egg yolks mixed with the mortar, a common practice believed to strengthen the construction material.

Today, the Charles Bridge is a pedestrian zone and a hive of activity both day and night. Artists, musicians, and vendors line the bridge, contributing to a vibrant atmosphere that makes it a must-visit destination for tourists and a beloved area for locals. The bridge also offers stunning views of the Prague Castle and the river, especially at dawn or dusk.

Despite its age, the Charles Bridge has been well-maintained, surviving floods and wars, and remains one of the most remarkable examples of Gothic architecture in the world. It is open to the public 24/7, and there is no admission fee to walk across its historic cobblestone pathway.
