Uherčice Chateau
Facts and practical information
The Uherčice Chateau is located in the village of Uherčice in the Znojmo district. It was declared a national cultural monument in 2001 due to its great value. It is administered by the National Heritage Institute. The castle is situated in the western part of the sparsely populated village.
Originally, there was a fortress here, which was rebuilt after the middle of the 16th century by the Krajířs of Krajk in the style of a northern Italian Renaissance residence. Already in 1564 the estate was bought by the Streuns of Schwarzenau, under whom the castle was rebuilt almost to its present form. Since then, the so-called Krajíř Old Castle with its residential tower has formed the eastern part of the complex. At the end of the 16th century, the Streuns built two parallel Renaissance wings, which were connected in the middle of their length by a transverse wall with a two-storey arcade facing the main courtyard. To the south of the new wing, an arcaded courtyard with a prismatic tower was built, through which the mansion was entered. The western area belonged to the outbuildings.
In 1628, the Berchtold family bought the estate, from them in 1692 the Heisslers of Heitersheim, who more or less devoted themselves to Baroque interior design. After the Hartig family, the Collalts enriched their possessions with Uherčice in 1768 and held it until 1945, when it was confiscated by the state. The castle served as the manor's administrative and economic centre until 1945.
