The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is the oldest building monument in Karviná and one of the oldest building monuments in Karviná and Těšín region in general. Its initial construction dates back to 1288, when during the reign of Mieszko I of the Piast family, Fryštát Castle was built here, of which the church is a part. The oldest written mention of the church dates back to 1376. It is an original stone single-nave Gothic building with a Latin cross plan, later modified in the Renaissance and Baroque style. Since 1958 it has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The church is located near the Fryštát Castle, with which it forms a single historical-building unit, as the residence of the Silesian ruling dynasty. In the immediate vicinity there are also the castle gardens from 1804.
