Jetsmark Kirke, Pandrup
Facts and practical information
Jetsmark Church is a church in the southern part of Pandrup in Jetsmark Parish in the former Hvetbo Herred Hjørring County in Vendsyssel, now Jammerbugt Municipality in the Region of North Jutland.
The church was possibly dedicated to St Nicholas in the Middle Ages. The apse, chancel and nave were built in Romanesque times of finely hewn granite blocks, the apse over a double plinth with an attic profile over the sloping edge, the chancel and nave over a sloping plinth. The north door with rectangular end is still in use, the south door is walled up. In the apse is an original window with symbols of Matthew and Luke carved into the lintel. A Romanesque window can be seen in the north side of the nave. In the late Gothic period the tower was built of recycled squares and monks' stones. The armoury is also from the late Gothic period. A rune stone with the inscription is placed in the armoury: Hove put the stone after his brothers Thorlak and Ride.
In the late Gothic period the choir and nave were given vaults, and the apse was given a three-aisled vault and separated from the choir by a wall. The tower room opens onto the nave by a pointed arch.
The altarpiece from around 1570 hangs above the choir arch and has been restored after studies by the National Museum's Conservation Department. After several changes over the years, the altarpiece was removed from its place and taken out of use in 1910. The reason is that the frescoes have now been rediscovered and are being brought to light. The congregation now looks at the altar wall's frescoes of the Last Judgement and the grille of the monstrance in its place. The old altarpiece is first hung high on the white surface above the chancel arch, thus still visible to the eye up towards the altar, but later it is hung down on the north wall of the nave. In 2000 the altarpiece was restored. The altar table dates from around 1600. The panels of the table are of light varnished pine with rectangular bays with three on the front and two on each side. The profiles in the bays are covered with gold leaf.
The sandstone baptismal font is of more recent date. Replaced by Birkelse Manor at the end of the period when the manor was church-owned. The inscription carved on the side of the baptismal font is JETSMARK. Baptismal font with accompanying baptismal jug. From the Middle Ages, c. 1500, when children were baptised.
The pulpit dates from the end of the 16th century. The sounding board is of oak. The chair consists of six vertical bays. Each compartment is divided into three, a large carved image field in the middle, a small painted image field at the bottom, and an even smaller field at the top with an inscription. The columns are smooth except for two rings. At the top they have a Corinthian capital with many scrolls. The carved images in the large fields depict, seen from the left: 1. The Baptism of Jesus. 3. The Crucifixion. 4. The Resurrection. 5. The Ascension. 6. The Second Coming. Above the large carved images are small boxes with inscriptions. The inscription reads; POTENTIA DEIPERIN FIRMITATEM CONFICITUR Z.COR.IZ V.9 16ZO
The organ was built by Th. Frobenius and Sons in 2008. The instrument was put into use at a service on Sunday 5 October 2008. In the spring of 2011, the organ was fitted with the 21st stop - a terst 1 3/5 and with setzer combinations, which enable quick and precise control of the instrument's colour sound.
