Lindholm Høje, Aalborg

Lindholm Høje is a remarkable archaeological site and museum located in the northern outskirts of Aalborg, Denmark. This ancient Viking burial ground is one of the most significant and well-preserved remnants of Scandinavia’s Viking Age, offering a unique window into the lives and spiritual beliefs of the Norse people who lived more than a thousand years ago.

The site is characterized by its large number of stone-set graves and burial mounds, which are thought to date back to both the Germanic Iron Age and the Viking Age. At Lindholm Høje, visitors can walk among the 682 graves and 150 ships settings, the stones of which are arranged in the outlines of ships. This particular form of burial was reserved for the most esteemed members of the Viking society, reflecting their seafaring culture and belief in a voyage after death.

The on-site museum, part of the Nordjyllands Historiske Museum, complements the outdoor experience with exhibits that delve into the daily life, customs, and craftsmanship of the Viking and Iron Age inhabitants.
