Kronprins Frederiks Bro, Frederikssund
Facts and practical information
Crown Prince Frederik's Bridge is a bridge over Roskilde Fjord, connecting Frederikssund with Hornsherred. The bridge, designed by Anker Engelund and inaugurated on 30 October 1935 by King Christian X, is a bascule bridge 151 metres long with a clear width of 30 metres. It is often assumed that the bridge is named after the later King Frederik IX, who was Crown Prince in 1935, but the earlier bridge was also called Crown Prince Frederik's Bridge after Frederik VIII.
The bridge is an important link from West to North Zealand, and heavy traffic often causes congestion, especially when the bridge is open for ship passages. Kronprinsesse Marys Bridge south of Frederikssund, which opened in 2019, was built to relieve traffic on Kronprins Frederik's Bridge.
The first bridge on the site was inaugurated in 1868, and was a 151-metre-long wooden bridge on pontoons. For a short period from 1928 to 1936, Midtsjællandske Jernbane had a 300-metre bridge across the fjord, just south of Kronprins Frederik's Bridge. Remains of it can still be seen, and part of it was transported to Aalborg, where it is part of the Jernbanebroen over Limfjorden.
