Cykelmuseum, Aalestrup
Facts and practical information
The Danish Bicycle Museum is a museum in Aalestrup that deals with the technical development of bicycles. It is housed in a building erected in 1921 as the residence of the director of the Jyden bicycle factory. The factory closed in 1962, and the museum started in 1974.
The bicycle collection includes about 150 bicycles from the wooden bicycle to today's models. The oldest is a velocipede, built in France in 1865 and participated in France's first bicycle race of 123 km from Rouen to Paris in 1869. The latest was made in India in 2002.
The bicycle collection is supplemented with bicycle accessories through the ages. The museum also has bicycles with auxiliary motors and mopeds, the oldest of which was made in 1903.
There is also an extensive collection of sewing machines from 1850 onwards and old radios. In the basement there is a butcher's workshop, mainly with material from the butcher P.C. Pedersen, who ran a business in Aalestrup in the early 1900s. There is also a small collection of old typewriters in the basement.
The museum has often lent effects to other museums and film and theatre productions.
