Sankt Nikolaj Kirke, Holbæk
Facts and practical information
Sankt Nikolai Kirke i Holbæk is the parish church of Sankt Nikolai Sogn in Holbæk Kommune.
The church was built in 1868-72 in red red brick on a granite base. The church is built in the Neo-Romanesque style with a north-facing tower facing Holbæk's main street. The main entrance to the church is to the north through the tower. The church is built on the same site as the monastery church, Sct. Lucius used to be. However, while the monastery church was located in the traditional position with the tower facing west, the newly built church was turned so that the tower faced north, presumably to provide a more attractive entrance from Ahlgade.
St Nikolai Church underwent extensive renovation in 1930 and less extensive renovation in 1967, and two more wings were added along Kirkestræde in 1970.
Originally made for the former Klosterkirke, the clock is inscribed "Peter Mathiesen, Copenhagen anno 1737" and strikes both quarter and hourly beats.
