Chapelle Rouge, Luxor

The Chapelle Rouge, or the Red Chapel, is a historic architectural wonder located in the vast temple complex of Karnak in Luxor, Egypt. This ancient structure is a testament to the grandeur of the New Kingdom period and is dedicated to the revered deity, Amun-Re. The chapel was constructed during the reign of Hatshepsut, one of Egypt's most famous pharaohs, who ruled from around 1479 to 1458 BCE.

This small but significant temple is made from red quartzite, lending it the name "Chapelle Rouge." It was originally erected within the Karnak Temple precincts, serving as a barque shrine where the sacred barque (a type of boat) of Amun-Re was housed during festival processions. The barque was a symbolic vessel that was believed to carry the presence of the god during these important religious events.

The Chapelle Rouge is renowned for its intricate inscriptions and relief carvings that adorn its walls, providing invaluable insights into the religious practices and iconography of ancient Egypt.
