Facts About Large white-faced darter
The large white-faced darter, also known as the yellow-spotted whiteface, is a captivating dragonfly species from the genus Leucorrhinia in the Libellulidae family. Measuring between 32 and 39 millimeters in length, it is the largest member of its genus in Europe. One of its standout features is the prominent yellow patch on the seventh segment of its abdomen, making it quite distinctive.
This dragonfly typically inhabits marshy areas and prefers waters that are less acidic compared to those favored by its close relative, the white-faced darter (Leucorrhinia dubia). The large white-faced darter's range extends from western Siberia to parts of France.
In England, sightings of this species have been extremely rare. There was only one recorded sighting in Kent in June 1859 until two additional sightings occurred in Suffolk in May 2012.
