Barbara altar

The Saint Barbara Altarpiece is a captivating example of medieval art, attributed to Master Francke. Originally, it served as the centerpiece in the medieval church in Kalanti, located in Southwest Finland, until its relocation in 1883. Intriguingly, local legend from the 19th century suggests that this exquisite altarpiece was discovered floating in the sea near Kalanti.

Today, the Saint Barbara Altarpiece is showcased at the National Museum of Finland. One of its most remarkable features is the series of paintings on the inner wings, which vividly depict the legend of Saint Barbara. These illustrations are what make this altarpiece exceptionally noteworthy, earning it acclaim among art enthusiasts and historians alike.
