The Stone of The Empress, Helsinki
Facts and practical information
Empire Stone is the oldest public monument in Helsinki, designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, at the Kaartinupara in Helsinki. It was revealed on December 18, 1835, with celebrations on Nikolai, 1835 in memory of the first visit to Helsinki, the emperor of Russian Emperor I's spouse Alexandra Fyodorovna. The monument was erected in where the Empire pair came to land from Ischora after arriving in Helsinki on June 10, 1833. The funds were assembled by a civic collection and funds issued by the Finnish Imperial Senate.
The memorial is a red granite obelisk, which is topped by a bronze, gilded ball. On top of the ball is the emperor of Russia, a two -headed eagle. The Kotka chest is the lion's coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Finland. The golden Kotka was designed by Magnus von Wright, known as a bird palate.
On the southern page of the memorial, the text in Finnish and to the north is a Finnish text that tells the purpose of the monument. At the time of erection of the statue, it was exceptional to use Finnish in such a context, as the official languages were Swedish and Russian. The Finnish language was not formalized until 1883. After the February Revolution on April 17, 1917, Russian sailors pulled down the bronze ball and double eagle of the memorial and removed the inkrists in the pedestal. The double eagle broke, but it and the ball on its platform remained safe. They were repaired in 1971, when the Soviet Union was first consulted and ensured that there was nothing in the neighboring country against this. The bronze ball was gilded in 2000 in honor of the 450th anniversary of Helsinki and the European Capital of Culture.
