Puolalanpuisto, Turku
Facts and practical information
Puolalanmäki is a hill in the center of Turku, VI and VII. It is one of the seven hills of Turku and 35.2 meters above sea level. On top of the hill is the Turku Art Museum, surrounded by Puolalanpuisto Park. Mäki is named after the village of Polish, which was connected to Turku from Maaria in the 17th century. Together with the Turku Art Museum, Puolalanmäki is one of the nationally significant built cultural environments defined by the National Board of Antiquities.
After the fire in 1775, a large number of shallow wooden cottages were built on Puolalanmäki, with sailors, artisans and races. The wooden houses in the area remained from the fire in Turku in 1827 and until the early 20th century. In the Middle Ages, there was a "Hospital of St. George's Hospital", the first known mention of St. George here in the Middle Ages. It was not until 1623 that the leprosy plant was moved to Seil's island in Nauvo.
The old building stock, including the fire tower completed in 1838, was demolished in the early 20th century. In this case, both the building of the Art Museum and the surrounding stone houses were built. The older building stock of the park is represented by the older part of Puolalanmäki High School and the wooden building next to it from the 1840s. The park was designed by Mauritz Hammarberg according to the Stockholm Mountain Park models. Hammarberg later became the Stockholm city gardener.
Today, the City of Turku Youth Center organizes a free concert every year in Puolalanpuisto Park.
On November 13, 1977, V.I. has been revealed by Mikhail Anikušin, Puolalanmäki. Lenin's Monument The other public artwork of Puolalanmäki is the statue of the Friendship of Leningrad and Turku and Jussi Mäntunen's Swans and Kurjet in the Nest.
