The Paavo Nurmi statue is a full -body sculpture made by Wäinö Aaltonen, Finland's most successful Olympic athlete. The bronze sculpture was completed in 1925 and has since been made four additional lights. The statue became a symbol of Finnish sports and an independent nation and an ambassador for the Finnish image.
The order meant the beginning of Aaltonen's national credit artist's career. Previously, he had had a strong local significance in the Turku region. The sculpture was given to Aaltonen as a "raising prize" because he was considered the most talented of the young sculptors. The sculpture was also the first sculpture commissioned by the Finnish state.
